The go box – tips for when you’re moving house
Selling a house and finalising a moving day can take months. Even when there are not many people in the chain, things can drag on due to negotiations, solicitors checking everything is in place and then working around everyone’s ‘normal lives’ to set a date that is convenient to everyone.
During this time, you will start packing everything that you do not need on a day-to-day basis away in boxes, only to be opened again when you arrive at your new home.
We just leave out the essentials that we need to carry on with life. Even these essentials can add up to quite a large amount of things that hastily need to be packaged as the moving day arrives. During this final stretch, it can be easy to throw something essential into a box. By the time you realise that you will need it the day you move house or as soon after, you’ve forgotten which of the hundreds of boxes it was tossed into.
What I’ve found useful in the past it to have two boxes that are left out. One is for the new owners of your current house. In there I put things that I find as we are packing which need to stay at the current address. Things like manuals for boilers or other items that you are leaving behind, spare keys, tools that only work for appliances at that house and perhaps most importantly a menu for a local takeaway – especially useful for the new occupants if they are new to the area and can’t face cooking on the first night in their new home.
In the second box I put essential things that we will need access to on moving day. Things like notes of the last things that we need to do before we leave the old house such as taking meter readings, directions to the new house if it’s far away, contact numbers for the removal company and snacks. Last time we moved I had written which room boxes needed to go to in the new house so I also printed off a map and room numbers so that when we arrived, I stuck these around the house so the removals team knew which boxes to take where.
Also in the box were tools and screws, bolts etc. for furniture that needed to be assembled on arrival such as beds and cots.
Having the two boxes as the last two items to worry about meant that we had everything we needed ready to go and also somewhere to throw things that we came across into, if it was relevant knowing that someone would be able to get access to them during the stress of moving day!
